It is our time, but a different time. Ross Oakley failed. There is no national league. Footy is strong, but it has to fight for fans town by town. You are the new head coach of a small club with lots of talent. You alone have the power to build a champion team.

Coming Soon To Early Access

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The game is starting in Season Zero, with a plan to run a year-long season starting in each December, at the end of which there will be a reset of most items including player cards. This will obviously be a difficult technical undertaking, particularly for the first time, so starting in the Early Access program indicates that back-end systems for running seasons are yet to be perfected.

Two of the three core modes are operational (Matches and Journeys), but Events are still to be added. There are other major features currently closed off including Trophies (achievements), Faction (guilds) and the Club employee system.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The short answer is: twelve months.

The plan is to get all three modes up and running in full by December 2024 for Season Zero, with a view to a full launch in December 2025 and a new season (with a card and currency reset) to prepare for the start of the 2025 Australian rules football season in February/March.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Mr Football is planned to include events with fresh content every week, operating as a live service game. Event themes are planned to be based in part on recent real-life events in the Australian Football League.

Features planned to be included are: Mateships (bonuses for playing connected players), Rooms (live chat), Faction (guilds), Legends (a Journeys mode for special Legends cards), Honours (an honours board for your best cards), Trophies (shareable displays of in-game achievements), Events, and Club (upgradable back-office employees).”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game has several modes of play: Match, Journeys and Events. The first two of those are operational, with varying levels of polish and quality-of-life additions. There are several PvE and PvP game features in those modes which have not been opened yet, as they require more work at the back end with plenty of content yet to be created. Events will be the third mode to be opened, which will include the first two but also add other mini-games.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game will always be free to play, with a commitment to making it possible to complete a full collection of all players in the Scrapbook across the course of a season (thus earning permanent Trophies which survive the season reset) without having to spend a cent. Prices for virtual items and currency will be determined at launch, when microtransactions are enabled.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community members are encouraged to give feedback on game features and bugs, of course, but also on the ranking of cards.

Tickle Monster will be active on the Steam forums answering feedback.”

About This Game

You are the coach of an Australian rules football club, in an alternate timeline where attempts to build a national competition failed in the 1980s, and the concept of leagues was discredited to the point where all state leagues were abandoned in favour of a more decentralised sport.

Choose a real Australian town or suburb, pick your colours, settle on a jumper design, find your mascot, and establish your home ground. Recruit players as cards from packs, then upgrade them, equip them and raise their ratings by merging cards until they are Complete.

Select 22 players to use their physical skills in Australian football matches against computer-controlled teams in Campaign, Origin and Iron Man modes, and directly against human-created teams in Ladder and Grade modes. Players are rated by the value, based on physical and mental attributes, plus skills specialised to their position and a host of personality traits, so there is a lot of complexity in picking your best 22.

Test your players' intangible personal qualities off the field across over 100 interactive missions in Journeys mode, comprised of Culture, Community and Media Street sections. Make decisions as your players engage with each other and the public through the journeys of their footballing lives.

Log in every day for spins on the Wheel of Football, trade duplicate cards in for better-rated players, achieve over time with Milestones, complete parts of your Scrapbook and finish Collections of associated players.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Tickle Monster has used the Midjourney AI service to generate most of the images shown in the game. In particular, the 650+ player images were generated using heavily pixelated and manually-edited composite images as source material, and mascots were generated from text inputs. None of the text content is AI-generated, though.

For more on the process used to generate player images, see this blog post:

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

The game includes text-based story missions called Journeys that cover fictitious off-field activities of young professional sportspeople, including interactions with members of the public at official and unofficial functions.

This includes charity work with at-risk youth including criminals, plus engagement with people who may be addicted to drugs and gambling, or involved in domestic violence, or associating with friends who are bad influences.

NOTE: the players themselves are never depicted as engaging in any of this risky behaviour themselves, but they interact with people who are.

Players are given moral choices for how to react to adult social situations, which may not be suitable for young children. The resolution of these missions is textual, with no visualisation beyond still images.
