What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Not every game is a good fit for early access, but we think Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades is a perfect fit. It’s a sandbox game encompassing many different game modes, mini-games, physical object systems and contexts that are evolving together. Moreover, as VR is developing at such a rapid pace, we think this is the best time to iterate on a live audience, and get tons of feedback from doing our development and experimentation out in the public.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Give that we’ve been in Early Access for over 6 years, and are still having a blast adding things, we don’t rightly know right now.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades will continue to grow through a series of experiments, varying from freeform sandbox to more traditionally structured games. We’re not set in stone on the exact scope or breadth of the experience, and have since initial launch on the store already added over a dozen environments that were not originally envisioned. We’re still actively designing, work-shopping ideas, and listening and responding to what the player community is enjoying. You should expect the following categories of content to continue being filled out over the game’s development:

- More Weapons/Virtual Objects: We’ve already got almost 500 firearms in the game (as of mid 2022) and have dozens more in various stages of pre-production. At this point in the process we aim for platforms that meaningfully expand H3’s interaction verbiage, or just ones we really really have a thing for.

- Game-play Modes: Hand tracked VR plus mechanically simulated objects make for an entirely new type of interaction rhythm for gaming gun-play. We continue to explore various genre/mechanic contexts for our virtual weapon systems, and pushing them into the game’s build at the very early stages to see how they play, and get feedback. The best that rise to the top with get further love and refinement.

- Chill out Spaces: For as much as games focus on the action-ee side of guns, anyone who’s gone shooting in the real world knows it’s an activity that’s much more akin to the pace of fishing. It’s a relaxing experience. So we’re going to continue to expand indoor and outdoor shooting range experiences focused on that, and all their futzy simulatory joy including manual reloading, zeroing of sights, and getting a stabilized long-range shooting system working smoothly.

- Anything else out nutty minds come up with and decide to slam in for the joy of it!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“H3VR has an extensive collection of Virtual Equipment comprising almost 500 firearms, 250+ attachments, about 100 melee weapons, and many other toys.

It also currently consists of just over 20 scenes and modes, broken down into several categories.

Games, Mini-games and Combat Arenas:
  • Take And Hold: Sci-fi Action Roguelike. Progress through multiple tiers of capture and hold challenges while earning tokens and spending them on better equipment. H3's most popular game with an active Competitive scene.
  • Return of the Rotwieners: A Zombie Action RPG with quests, unlockable and random loot, and H3's largest environment to explore.
  • Meat Fortress: A combat arena homage to Team Fortress 2 with a renditions of the game's guns remade for VR and meaty AI parodies of the game's character classes.
  • Wurstworld: A wild-west themed adventure shooting experience. Come explore the largest meat-themed amusement park in the midwest. Includes bandit bots to fight, a horseshoe course to conquer, and puzzles to solve!
  • M.E.A.T.S.: Themed dynamic target sequences in 8 challenging categories. Uses an unlock system where players earn S.A.U.C.E. to unlock various firearms.
  • Grillhouse XL: A recently added Combat Arena Sandbox showing off recently added destructible Door and Window tech added to the game.
  • Boomskee: A pyrotechnic twist on the classic arcade game. Fling grenades of various types down a ramp to blow up targets for points and more grenades.
  • Meat Grinder: A challenging survival horror mode, where the player is trapped in a nightmarish maze by a deranged fast-food research scientist. Can you survive long enough to fulfill his deranged demands?
  • The Gunnasium: A combined climbing and shooting challenge. Think American Ninja-Warrior with a handgun!
  • Arcade Prototype: A Sci-fi minimalist experiment where you shoot at swarms of geometric shapes that attack in waves. The very first combat experiment we built in H3!
  • Breaching Prototype: A locomotion-centric course with you breaching a simulated building with destructible standees and IPSC regulation shooting targets on a timer.
  • Mini-Arena: A small-environment experiment with a configurable bot spawner, and dramatic lighting.

Sandbox Ranges:
  • Sampler Platter: H3's current introduction scene with a set of firing range pits and a dynamic control help panel to introduce you to the game's arsenal
  • Proving Ground: The scene that most common host's H3's
  • Warehouse Range: A large indoor environment will the entire suite of weapons and interactive toys we've been working on. There's a dynamic target sequencer to play with as well.
  • Friendly 45 Range: The back yard shooting range we all wish we had. With sets of steel targets in sets going out to 100 meters, and a simple Skeet-style target launcher.
  • Indoor Range: A quintessential 5-lane indoor shooting environment with a scored paper target system that can be adjusted to varying ranges.
  • Sniper Range: A two-level 400m long course designed for prone-firing of sniper rifles at extreme ranges.
  • Arizona Range (and Arizona at Night): A relaxing outdoor desert plain environment with various destructible targets. A great chill-out space.

Holiday Scenes:
  • Winter Wasteland: A combination Action-Adventure game and Advent Calendar. Fight through strange robots in the ruins of the North Pole and discover what disaster struck years before.
  • Cappocolosseum: A set of mini-games including a Target-hunt, Battle-Petite, and a Ridiculous homage to a classic Stealth-Action Boss Battle.
  • Meatmas SnowGlobe: This scene changes every year to include new festive goodies!

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“There will be a small price increase when we leave early access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Open development and community interaction have been at the core of H3VR as a project from the very beginning. As can be seen in our devlog series that goes from the first week of the game’s development back in 2016 til now, we’ve always been open and interactive with the community about all aspects of the project. The collaboration has made the game all the richer and we continue to love live-devving this project one week at a time interfacing with our communities here on Steam, on Reddit, on Discord and on Youtube.”

    About This Game

Do you like hot dogs? How about horseshoes? Hand grenades? (everyone likes hand grenades) Anyway, we've got all that, and guns. SO MANY GUNS. So if you like ordnance, meat, and groan-worthy puns, this is the VR sandbox game for you.

Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades (H3VR for short), is the heaping pile of our mad obsessive VR experiments. This is an impressionistically developed experience. We’re 6+ years and a 100+ updates in so far, so expect it to mutate, expand, contract, somersault, and occasionally explode along the way to final release.

    Gear Up

Assemble your ultimate range companion from nearly 500 Firearms and 250 Attachments. Customize your perfect loadout, be it tacti-cool or utterly cursed and save it for future play. (Coming Later This Year: Share your creations with your friends too!)

    Plink & Train

Try out your favorite platforms on H3’s suite of Firing and Demolitions ranges. Improve your aim and reaction time in the M.E.A.T.S. target shooting trainer and Compete on global leaderboards.

    Meat Your Maker

Combat some of the most sophisticated AI Agents in VR (yup, even though they’re hot dogs), at range or in melee. Put your mastery of H3’s massive arsenal to the test, and even join the First 2 Wurst Tournament Community on Discord!

    Explore a Meaty ‘Murica

Dive into a Wiener’s Weird World; a land overtaken by confused but affable sentient meat and the ruins of bizarre firearm themed attractions. Experience an absurd fragmentary tale told through multiple genres of game.

    Celebrate

Enjoy the various goofball holiday event modes the game has gotten over the years, including our much beloved biennial Meatmas Firearm Advent Calendar.

    Take & Hold

Battle your way through this Sci-fi Action Roguelite. In Take & Hold you are the intruder to the system. Equip yourself to take and then defend control points, while defeating Encryption Targets of escalating complexity. Earn tokens for your performance and spend them in item shops to prepare for the next wave.

    Return of the Rotwieners

Awake outside the town of Wienerton, where a plague of rotten undead meat has beset the eccentric townsfolk of the Honey Hamlet. Find weaponry, craft powerups and explosives, and complete quests on your journey to discover the cause of the Rotwiener outbreak.

    Meat Fortress

Fight in the Meat Fortress combat arena. Made with the official permission of Valve, this loving homage to one of our favorite games has Meaty parodies of Team Fortress 2’s 9 iconic classes, and VR adaptations of the entire original firearm set of the game, as well as over a dozen original creations made in the TF2 style.

    Wurstwurld

Explore the ruins of the Wurstwurld amusement park. Solve puzzles, complete extreme horseshoe challenges, stand off against robit bandits and collect old logs that reveal the background on the most foolhardy and most assuredly not child safe amusement park doomed to failure.

    Meat Grinder

Survive the Meat Grinder, the very first game mode added to H3 back in 2016. Navigate by flashlight through a surreal hellish fast food themed maze, collect precious ammo, defending against animatronic assailants, and dragging the ‘meat’ back to the Grinder in time.
