What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We need feedback from you to make WizardChess the best game it can possibly be. Mixing procedural generation, randomness and chess together is a delicate blend - and your help balancing and testing has been instrumental to improving the game!

WizardChess is made two people part-time and sometimes it gets a little lonely. If this seems like your sort of game we'd love to hear from you!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are on track to reach v1.0 in late 2024. Although after 3+ years of development already, we want to be sure not to rush anything!

WizardChess will likely continue to evolve indefinitely past our current 1.0 target, and we're not yet sure when we'll call it "done".”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We intend to add additional maps, map generation rules, biomes, enemies, bosses, challenge rooms, units, traits and secrets until the game feels "full". Ideally we want every WizardChess run to play out differently and we'll be working towards that goal based on your feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Our milestone for launching into Early Access was to have the overall game loop in place, which we are now very happy with. Currently WizardChess includes a tutorial and a core procedurally generated run, you'll battle through two biomes + bosses to face a final challenge. There are six friendly units to master and over a dozen enemy types to face.

This is a solid base to build from that we believe is fun already, but we can see huge potential in how to grow from here.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game will launch at the lowest price (excluding future discounts / sales) and increase as we feel its value increases towards 1.0.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“WizardChess is a complex game and development will only get more nuanced as we proceed. The community will be vital in helping us stay focused on the fun as well as delivering a high quality game.

Sometimes as roguelites grow they suffer from content bloat, frustrating RNG, repetitive runs and bugs; we've seen it before and would like any help we can to avoid these traps.

We welcome bug reports + feedback through the Steam Community, Discord and Twitter. Given the fact both members of the team work full-time jobs we may not always respond immediately but we really do read every message.

About This Game

WizardChess is Deckbuilding Chess from a preposterous fantasy realm, invented by mysterious wizards. Multiple game modes challenge players to think on their feet and balance tactics with speed: hit the Arcade for quick, replayable runs or explore the world in Story mode. Whether you're an amateur or an expert WizardChess has something for Grandma's and Grand Masters alike.

Manoeuvre specialized units (of 50+ unique classes) in emergent, often unhinged, turn-based combat and use unique skills to defeat enemy units. Much like chess, small errors can (and often will) lead to harsh consequences. Unlike chess, your pieces are enchanted and have ATK, DEF and SKL stats... and your opponent(s) are the Fae.

Recruit, upgrade, sacrifice, trade and gamble your units away to create the most powerful build you can. Learn the systems, unlock the full pool of units and take calculated risks and maybe you’ll defeat the Fae Queen herself.

WizardChess is entirely procedurally generated. Every run, every room, every tile, every item, and every unit is determined by a combination of luck and a dynamic response to your playstyle. Each biome features unique rooms, enemies, hazards and a boss with its own opponent "style" and scaling difficulty.

Hey, listen!

We’re still in development and encourage only brave wizards to try the game in Early Access. If you’d prefer to avoid bugs, design changes and balance issues, Follow + Wishlist and wait for the beta or full 1.0 release. The quality and scope of any EA builds are not representative of final game. Regardless, we've got plenty to show you

Love, TwoPM.

TwoPM consists of Ben Follington and Ricky James, both based in Queensland, Australia. We've been best friends for about 15 years and have been making games for almost as long. We both have jobs and can only work on games during nights and weekends so we like to build projects both patiently and strategically. Financial support of WizardChess or any of our other work will allow us to dedicate more time to game development and deliver content faster.
