What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Box Office Boss is a labor of love and a pet idea the developers have been playing with for some time. The game is launching in early access to help collect player impressions and opinions. This feedback will help us balance the math behind the game and prioritize new features from our long wishlist. Please bear with us and let us know of any issues or problems that you run into. We are so excited for you to be playing our game and can’t wait to hear what you think as we continue to make it better and better.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Box Office Boss will be in early access no longer than a year, perhaps 6 months under ideal circumstances. We wanna make sure we get the balance right and have the right amount of features to provide a tight and consistent gameplay experience.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“As we develop Box Office Boss we will be balancing the game and adding/removing/tweaking features to provide the best possible experience for our players.

The main areas we would like to focus on during the Early Access period are:
  • Balancing each and every decision point so that the experience scales properly whether you are making small independent features to huge tentpole blockbusters.
  • Since this is mostly a text and decision-based game, we want to polish and iterate on every chance we have to give positive visual feedback to the player. We want to make sure we are pushing the visual experience of the game at every meaningful event or meaningful action in the game.
  • As the balance of the core experience solidifies based on feedback. We want to layer more important decisions and nuanced strategy points into the core decision-making loop. For example, we could introduce things like hiring a complete ensemble of actors for certain scripts, adding details and options to the location-picking process, and micro-managing finer details of the script development and/or marketing process.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“This initial version of Box Office Boss has all of the core gameplay features listed in our "About This" section on our store page. As more features are added with each update, we will expand and edit that main list to accurately reflect the current state of the game.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price might increase once we transition out of Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will be taking all feedback and integrating it into our development process. The feedback will help us prioritize features and balance changes. You can email us at for feedback.”

About This Game

Box Office Boss is based on the idea that making movies in Hollywood is not that different from gambling in Vegas. Sometimes beginner’s luck rules the day, but the pros know the key to success is about making smart bets and mitigating your risk.

Melding classic tycoon structure with Vegas style games and roguelike mechanics, Box Office Boss allows you to play the role of a movie studio executive. Just like traditional tycoon games, you pick your directors, actors and production, but with each choice there is chance involved. Just like in Vegas, you can decide how high of a risk your are willing to take. The longer you stay in the game, the more bonus chips you collect which can dramatically alter the course of your future productions.

Reel Risks, Real Rewards

Pick the story elements with the best rewards. These story elements will act as possible bonuses when you are selecting your actors and directors. They can add much needed popularity stars or help hedge a risky talent bet. They can even be aligned with bonus chips to unlock more rewards.

Bet on your Blockbuster

Choose your tier of director and actor talent. Decide if you want to make a risky bet on cheaper options or pay the big bucks for a more reliable star. Watch for synergies between your talent and story element bonuses. As always, your chips can affect the outcome of your selection and roll.

Cut! Print! Double Down!

Spin the wheel of fate to reveal your final critics score. Release your movie and watch the box office returns roll in. Did you produce the next big hit or did you even make your money back? Whatever the results, pick a bonus chip to alter the course of your next productions.
