What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We started development of Lunar Odyssey with the original goal of creating a highly detailed and accurate educational experience and simulation of the Lunar Lander. However, as production has gone on, we have decided to redefine what an educational VR simulation is and have larger plans for incorporating a purely gameplay driven mode into Lunar Odyssey. We plan for this mode to be enjoyed as a stand-alone game, but will have a symbiotic relationship with the educational side of Lunar Odyssey as well to help encourage people to learn about the Apollo missions, the Lunar Lander, and the experiments conducted on the moon. However, this additional gameplay driven experience will take time to develop and the educational and simulation side of the experience is nearly complete and we feel that it stands alone as a complete experience. We plan on releasing it as Early Access while we continue work on the gameplay portion of the project.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Approximately a year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan on the 1.0 release having an additional game mode that consists of a gameplay-driven first person shooter experience that has a symbiotic relationship with the game modes released in Early Access. The goal is for this game mode to be enjoyed as its own stand-alone experience but incorporate elements that encourage people to enjoy the simulation and learning side of Lunar Odyssey. This new FPS side of gameplay will thematically fit in with the design language of a Lunar mission and provide an enjoyable and engaging backdrop to play in.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access release will consist of two game modes; “Escape” and “Free Roam”.

Escape is a simulated digital twin of the Lunar Lander used in the Moon Landing Apollo missions. The player will have to go through a series of actions taken from official NASA checklists to start up the Lander and escape the surface of the moon.

We are planning on adding more to the Free Roam mode throughout Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“It will increase in cost when the title leaves Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have a community Discord server as well as a subreddit where we will be taking community feedback into account. Since Escape and Free Roam are intended first and foremost as educational experiences, we value the communities feedback. We have gone to great lengths to ensure that all the details and minutia are accurate, however, if we made an error and the community catches it, we will fix it as we want to have the most accurate digital twin of the Apollo Lunar Lander available in VR. In order to provide feedback, please message the moderators of our Discord server.”

About This Game

Built in Unreal Engine 5, Lunar Odyssey is an immersive first-person VR celestial experience, depicting details of the Apollo Missions and the Lunar Lander, the moon surface and Apollo-era technology with impressive accuracy. Lunar Odyssey early access offers the player both a mission-based mode (Escape) and free-roam.

ESCAPE
In Escape, during a modern day mission, the player is stranded on the Lunar surface after an incident and must utilize Apollo-era technology to Escape. Follow exacting launch procedures used by astronauts on the Apollo Missions to successfully launch the LM before your oxygen runs out.

EXPLORE
In Free Roam, the player is free to explore the lunar surface near the Orontius Crater which has been faithfully recreated from NASA scans. The player will also be able to interact with a variety of experiments and hardware from Apollo-era Lunar missions.

SPACE GOLF
Space Golf is a fun mini-game included in the Free-Roam mode. Hit the targets at various distances to earn points! Whether you're competing for the high-score (currently 441 by one of our QA team members), or just having a relaxing golf session, Space Golf is a great time!

NOTE: This game is built in Unreal Engine 5, which itself is still in Beta.
