About This Game

On the spectrum between Pong and Puzzle Bobble - and infused with elements of classic games such as Tug-of-War, Simon, Bowling, and Rock Paper Scissors - That Lava Lamp Game is a fiercely competitive lane-based bubble shooter designed for two players.

The objective is simple: try to get those goopy, colorful wax bubbles from your end of the lamp, through to your opponent's end.

  • Tap glass (or press button/key) to shoot a bubble from your lamp
  • Bubbles with matching color pop when they collide
  • Unmatched bubbles clump together, and obstruct the lane

  • Each lamp is equipped with a shield, which can block one bubble of each color
  • Letting a bubble touch down at your end, without a shield to block it, loses that lamp lane to your opponent
  • To keep your lamp protected, and tap the shield panel (or press button/key) to reload one shield color

Proximity sensors warn you of incoming unshielded bubbles, but you'll need to act fast!

Your bubble supply gauge shows the upcoming queue of bubble colors.

  • The supply of bubbles is limited. Try not to waste them! Shooting a bubble or reloading a shield consumes one bubble from the supply.
  • If the next bubble color isn't useful now, press the Skip button to move it to the back of the queue. You can use it later in the game.
  • Winning a lane claims all bubbles and shields in that lane for your bubble supply, giving you an edge in the remaining lanes.
  • Two players contest three lamp lanes. The player who wins more lanes within the 90-second time limit, wins the game.

In PLAYER vs PLAYER mode, two players duke it out on one device, or online.

To suit your setup, there's a choice of screen layouts:
  • HEAD TO HEAD: Lanes are oriented vertically. Recommended for one player on a device, or two players sharing a table-top display.
  • SIDE BY SIDE: Lanes are oriented horizontally. Recommended for two players sharing a PC screen.

Between games against human players, you can hone your skills and unlock levels taking on 'bot royalty' in the BOT CHALLENGE single-player campaign.
This features a cast of 12 robotic opponents inspired by classic sci-fi TV & cinema.

Skill Levels

CHILL: For Beginner vs Beginner, with the lowest bubble limit.
FROTHY: Low bubble limit, encourages careful play and avoiding wastage.
FEVERISH: Double the bubbles for a high-speed, high-stakes showdown.
PSYCHED: More bubbles but less shields, emphasizing opening strategies.
FRENZIED: Ample bubbles for a epic struggle between expert players.

Each level is accompanied by its own catchy tune, from a notable soundtrack featuring rare vintage retro-futuristic synth, upcycled from the vaults of the De Wolfe production music library.

Improving on run-of-the-mill 'frozen bubble' games, these bubbles squash and stretch according to stylized physical simulation. Adept play needs a good sense of how the bubbles behave:

  • Like in a real lava lamp, fresh hot bubbles float up, then sink as they cool.
  • Clumps of bubbles are heavy, and move slowly.
  • Shockwaves from popping bubbles shunt nearby bubbles away.
  • Slow-moving bubbles fall towards the nearest end, or get stuck in the middle. They need some speed to make it across the lane.

Gameplay

  • Each player has a heads-up display showing the remaining game time.
  • The display also shows how many bubbles remain in your supply, and how many more (or less) bubbles you have than your opponent.
  • Lamps light up with the color of the next bubble. The Skip button border highlights the second color in the queue.
  • You can't shoot while a bubble is already in your lamp's end zone.
  • A bell sound starts a 10-second shot clock, on inactivity or exhausted bubble supplies. Shoot a bubble to keep the game going.

Playing Tips

  • When bubbles clump in the middle of a lane, try to push them towards your opponent.
  • Overwhelm your opponent's defenses by attacking in multiple lanes simultaneously.
  • Shooting a matching bubble is the strongest defense against an incoming clump.
  • If you're concerned about running out of bubbles, try to avoid popping your own bubbles.
